A brief overview of my mentee JAY

Jay is a long time friend that is a co-worker. Jay graduated from National with his teaching credential and a Masters. Here is the funny thing, his masters is in Technology. Keith, why did you pick him?, you may be asking yourself. Jay, self admittedly pretty much paid for his masters. Jay asks technology questions all the time. For example, he just learned how to attach a document to an e-mail last year and this is from a guy who has a masters in technology! Jay just recently got the bug to social network because some of his friend e-mailed him and told him to join the 21st century. It is hard to explain but Jay cowers at almost anything technology based. He explained to me that he want to join facebook but that he is afraid everybody will see his stuff and that people will bother him. I sorta told him that this is the point of social networking but that we could create a space and filter who could and could not view his site. When I told him that these things were possible his apprehension subsided a little.

Jay is a teacher like me. We get e-mails like crazy everyday. Jay has no e-mail organization. In fact at this time he has over 2000 deleted e-mails in his folder that he does not want to permanently erase because he "may need them". Jay also has over 1000 e-mails in his in-box. Jay needs help with e-mail organization.

I feel my job will be to give Jay the confidence he needs to use the talent he has as an educated professional. Knowing Jay for these years gives me a starting point. A lot of Jays fears regarding technology seem unfounded. I think that Jay just need someone hands on, to be there with him and guide him so that he will gain confidence in his skills.

FYI---this post and the next 2 post will be on the same day. This post is an overview of my mentee. The next post will be from our initial session that occurred on 4/16/09 and the following post will be from our first meeting on 4/23/09
